The Westside Blvd. Widening Project, which is being paid for with a combination of $5.7 million in voter-approved City of Albuquerque “street bonds” and matching federal funds, is designed to improve traffic flow and safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. In addition to widening Westside Boulevard from two to four lanes between Golf Course Road and NM 528, it focuses on improving traffic flow at several major intersections. The project also includes a multi-use trail on the north side of Westside Blvd., a sidewalk on the south side of Westside Blvd. and bike lanes in each direction (east and west) on Westside Blvd.

This intersection will be widened to provide dual left turn lanes in the northbound and southbound directions and a single dedicated left turn lane eastbound and westbound along Westside Boulevard. In addition, a dedicated right turn lane will be provided in the eastbound, westbound, and northbound directions with a shared right turn/through lane in the southbound direction. The intersection will be improved to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards at the curb returns and crosswalks, and a new traffic signal will be installed at the intersection.

This intersection will be widened to provide for a dedicated left turn lane onto 7 Bar Loop from westbound Westside Boulevard as well as dedicated left and right turn lanes from northbound 7 Bar Loop onto Westside Boulevard. The Westside Boulevard continuous median will have a median opening to facilitate these full access turning movements. In addition, all pedestrian facilities within the intersection will be upgraded to be compliant with current ADA standards.

The intersection will be widened to provide for a dedicated left turn lane onto Sierrita Road from westbound Westside Boulevard as well as dedicated left and right turn lanes from northbound Sierrita Road onto Westside Boulevard. The Westside Boulevard continuous median will have a median opening to facilitate these full access turning movements. In addition, all pedestrian facilities within the intersection will be upgraded to be compliant with current ADA standards.

This intersection will be widened to provide for a dedicated, channelized left turn bay onto Grande Boulevard from eastbound Westside Boulevard as well as dedicated right turn lane from southbound Grande Boulevard onto westbound Westside Boulevard. In addition, all pedestrian facilities within the intersection will be upgraded to be compliant with current ADA standards.

Minor improvements are proposed at the Westside Boulevard and NM 528 intersection. Proposed improvements are designed to improve the operations of the signalized intersection reducing vehicle delay. Improvements are also proposed to increase safety for bicyclists and pedestrians through ADA upgrades, additional signage, and notifications to motorists.
